The track down toward the sea with Kangaroo Island on the horizon

Getting here

A hundred and fourteen kilometres, and six of them unsealed

114 kilometres from the Adelaide CBD. The final six are unsealed, and they are the reason nobody is at the other end of them.

Under two hours from the city, and the last bit is the point

  1. Adelaide to Yankalilla

The straightforward part, down the Main South Road. Most guests stop here — Drakes for groceries, the Yankalilla Bakery for bread.

  2. Yankalilla to Delamere

Through the hills. The Delamere Store is fifteen minutes out from the retreat and covers whatever you realised you forgot.

  3. Rarkang Road

You will pass the sign for the Talisker Mine off to the right. Keep going. The last six kilometres are unsealed and take longer than the map thinks.

  4. The gate

Then a private track down to the house. Check-in is from 3pm, and there is nobody else on the property.

Or you could not drive at all

By helicopter

Helivista fly between Adelaide Airport and the retreat, and will build a day around it — cellar doors, a remote picnic, or across to Kangaroo Island.

Driven

Off Piste 4WD Tours run transfers from Adelaide Airport, and they know the region better than a rideshare will.

Who else comes to you

Read this before you leave the city

  • Fill the tank before Yankalilla.
  • Buy your groceries on the way. Deep Creek is thirty-five minutes from a supermarket.
  • Bring walking shoes if you intend to use the trails.
  • Pets are prohibited — both properties are working sheep farms.
  • The retreat may not suit children under ten. It sits on a steep hill above a beach.

Plotted from real coordinates, so the bearings and the distances between points hold. The coastline is deliberately not drawn — approximating the shape of a real place and presenting it as a map is how maps start lying.

Two houses, one coastline

They are close enough that people do both in a week and far enough apart that they are not the same holiday. The Retreat is at the end of the peninsula with the last six kilometres unsealed. The Villa is ten minutes above Victor Harbor, with a bakery, a pub and a beach in walking distance of the car.
