“We were lucky enough to visit Naiko once more, and enjoyed lovely walking weather, many dolphins enjoying the aquamarine waters, kangaroos, sheep, birds… beautiful skies and astounding views across to Kangaroo Island. Naiko is such an easy and comfortable escape from the city we could easily imagine ourselves staying for much longer.”

Deep Creek · Sleeps six
Naiko Retreat
A secluded beach shared with nobody else.

Encounter Bay, Victor Harbor · Sleeps ten
Naiko at the Bluff
A pool, a great room, and 180 degrees of Encounter Bay.

There is a spaceship in the she-oaks
A Futuro house, designed by the Finnish architect Matti Suuronen in 1968 as a portable ski chalet. Roughly sixty survive anywhere in the world. This one stood on Melbourne Street in North Adelaide before it came here, fell into disrepair while the retreat was still an idea, and was restored into a treatment room.
Heysen Trail walkers still come over the rise and stop dead. The only way inside is to book a massage.
One day, from the light arriving to the Milky Way

The light arrives before you do
East-facing glass down the length of the building. There is no need to set an alarm and no way to sleep through it.
See the retreat
Coffee, and nowhere to be
The Nespresso machine, the long table, and the whole of Backstairs Passage through the window.

Four minutes down to the water
A wicker basket and beach chairs by the door. A cold outdoor shower for the sand on the way back.
The four trails
An hour inside a spaceship
The Futuro opens when a therapist is in it, and closes again afterwards.
The whole story
The deck does the rest
Outdoor couches facing west over the cove. This is the hour people extend their booking during.
When to come
One fire, the whole building
A low-emission wood heater ducted through to the bedrooms, and the sea audible underneath it.
How it runs off-grid
Nothing between you and it
Off-grid, ninety minutes from the nearest city glow. The Milky Way is not something you look for.
The land it sits onA stay shaped around why you came
Treatments in the Futuro, a private dinner, an intimate occasion, or simply the right season for the coast. Start with the part that matters to you.

The land came first, and it is still the point
The Johnsons bought Rarkang in 1998 to give it back to the wildlife, and have been revegetating it ever since. Everything here was photographed on the property.
